What an SSL certificate price pays for
The price of an SSL certificate depends mostly on how much the certificate authority verifies and on how many names the certificate covers. A DV certificate proves only that you control the domain, an OV certificate adds your verified organization name, and an EV certificate adds a stricter company check; a wildcard certificate covers every subdomain one level deep, and a multi-domain certificate lists several names.
The SSL prices below are per year of service, but since 15 March 2026 a publicly trusted SSL/TLS certificate may be valid for at most 200 days, so a one-year plan means at least one reissue and reinstall during the year. From 15 March 2027 the limit falls to 100 days, which means at least three reissues a year.

What changes the price of an SSL certificate?
Two choices drive most of the difference in SSL certificate prices: the validation level, which decides what the certificate authority checks and what the certificate says about you, and the coverage, which decides how many hostnames one certificate secures. Encryption strength is not one of them: the Baseline Requirements set the same key-size rules for DV, OV and EV certificates, so a pricier certificate does not encrypt more strongly.

How often will I reissue a certificate I pay for yearly?
A one-year SSL plan no longer means one certificate that lasts a year. The CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements cap how long any publicly trusted SSL/TLS certificate may be valid, whichever company sells it, so during a plan you reissue the certificate and install it again on the server:

When is a free certificate enough?
A free certificate is enough when a DV certificate meets your needs and your server can renew it automatically. Let's Encrypt charges no fee, issues DV certificates only, and makes them valid for 90 days by default, so it suits servers that run an ACME client. A paid certificate makes sense when you need OV or EV identity in the certificate, or when the server or appliance cannot run automatic renewal.
