What a DV SSL certificate is, and how you get one
A DV (domain validated) SSL certificate proves that whoever requested it controls the domain name. It enables HTTPS under the same key-size rules as OV and EV, but names no company, because no company is checked. Anyone who controls the domain can buy one; no business documents are needed.
My-SSL's DV certificates are issued by Certum. After checkout you submit a CSR and pass Certum's domain check, and Certum lists the verification time for its DV certificates as about one hour. Each certificate is valid for up to 199 days, so on the yearly plan you must reissue it at least once, free of charge. From 15 March 2027 the limit is 100 days.

Certum marks the email check "deprecation planned"; the CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements say CAs should not use it since 15 March 2026 and must not from 15 March 2028. A DNS record check also works for wildcard certificates.
Does a single-domain certificate cover www?
No. Certum does not add www to a single-domain certificate; it covers only the name in your CSR. For both example.com and www.example.com, choose the multi-domain option or a wildcard, which also covers the parent domain.

How quickly does DV SSL activate?
Certum issues a DV certificate automatically once it has confirmed that you control the domain, and lists the verification time for its DV certificates as about one hour.
Is DV SSL right for my website?
If you only need HTTPS and don't need your company name in the certificate, yes: DV suits personal websites, blogs, portfolios and small business sites. If you do want the company name shown, choose an OV SSL certificate; Certum lists OV verification at up to 1–5 days.
Will DV SSL work with my hosting provider?
A DV certificate from Certum is a standard TLS certificate, so it works with any host or control panel that lets you install a certificate you bought elsewhere. cPanel's SSL/TLS screen lets you upload one, and Plesk lets you upload the certificate file or paste it as text (see the cPanel installation guide and the Plesk installation guide). Hosted site builders work differently: WordPress.com, for example, gives every site a free Let's Encrypt certificate itself, so there is nothing to buy there.
