    Until recently you could buy a certificate, install it, and forget about it for a year. That era is over. Under CA/Browser Forum ballot SC-081v3 the maximum validity of a publicly trusted TLS certificate is now 199 days, and the schedule keeps tightening. Nothing about the sticker price changed — but the number of times per year you touch the certificate did, and that is where the money actually goes.

    Reissue and reinstall fees

    Changing servers, rotating a compromised key, or adding a hostname means a reissue. Some providers allow it free for the term; others cap the free window at 30 days and bill after that.

    Public list prices collected in July 2026 from the storefronts of Sectigo, DigiCert, GlobalSign, Certum, GoGetSSL and My-SSL, plus the $0 tier represented by Let's Encrypt and ZeroSSL. Prices are captured for a single certificate on a one-year term.

    2. Normalisation

    Multi-year prepay offers are divided down to an effective annual figure, and renewal rates are used rather than first-term promotional rates where the two differ. Currency is USD, excluding VAT/sales tax.

    3. Range definition

    The low end of each range is the cheapest publicly trusted option we could actually buy; the high end is the median premium-brand price, not the absolute maximum. Outlier enterprise contracts and bundled managed-PKI deals are excluded.

    4. Validity and fee rules

    Maximum validity, reuse of validation data, and reissue entitlements are taken from the CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements and ballot SC-081v3 — not from vendor marketing copy. Where a CA's own documentation contradicts its marketing, the documentation wins.
